This project seeks to fill the gap in the history of the international mobilization and solidarity of behalf of foreign political prisoners in the interwar period. After the end of the First World War, political repression emerged on a new scale. Political dissidents were represented as enemies of the state and regimes introduced stricter legislation regarding political crime, attributing dangerous connotations to political dissidence and refusing a special status and privileges to political offenders. In the context of interwar internationalism, different international associations and political committees began to intervene on behalf of foreign political prisoners, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Committee for Political Prisoners, the International Red Aid for Revolutionary Fighters (MOPR), the Ligue internationale des droits de l’Homme, the World Relief Committee for the Victims of German Fascism.
